In the Thumsee near the Bavarian City Bad Reichenhall swam already the founder of the psychoanalaysis Sigmund Freud. Together with his family he spent some summer holidays in the nowadays renovated Seewirt.
Lake Thum – easy to reach-gorgeous for swimming-difficult for parking
Bad Reichenhall is not far from the motorway Salzburg Munich and the Thumsee again about three kilometers west. The lake itself can be easily reached both by car and by public transport from Bad Reichenhall. But that with the easy accessibility of a lake is almost always a double-edged thing. That’s the same with Thumsee. The fact that you can get close and effortless with the car, on the one hand facilitates spontaneous swimming activities, on the other hand, this circumstance ensures high noise levels and lack of parking space. There is a lot going on in midsummer. Therefore, the Thumsee for me at this time rather a swimming than a lake. Because even for longer swimming units the Thumsee with its length of 1000 meters and a width of 350 meters is quite well suited. Peaceful, quiet relaxing at the beach is in the main season however a bit difficult.
Thumsee – the scrub-lake
The name of the Lake Thum is derived from the Latin dumosus, which means “overgrown with bushes”. Somewhat more benevolent one could formulate: Lke Thum is surrounded by abundant forest. At the small, nearby swamp pond “Seemösl” stood Germany’s oldest water lily breeding plant. Once nine different species were bred here, today the plant is largely expired. At Lake Thum there are beautiful pebble beaches, a public lawn and the “Thumseebad”. This offers an attractive infrastructure and a terrace cafe. The Seewirt has a beautiful lake terrace, a good kitchen and a nice function room, but no guest rooms (more). To stay or for longer (holiday) stays on the lake, however, offers the cozy 3-star Hotel Seeblick.
Wildswimming is usually possible on Lake Thum in winter too
For me, the Thumsee is actually in the “off-season” the most charming. For example, in spring, when the higher mountain lakes are not yet ice-free. Also in the autumn the Thumsee shows a very appealing, almost poetic side. The “undergrowth” is then colorful and together with the reflections in the water are very expressive moods. A very special attraction of Thumsee in winter. Since he rarely freezes and the Seewirt is now open even over the winter months, this is a real Eldorado for ice swimmers. With the extremely welcome opportunity to properly strengthen and warm up after accomplished heroic deeds in the Seewirt …
